Ready, Set, Sail: Packing Essentials for Your Adventures Afloat Voyage

Planning your Adventures Afloat voyage? Whether you’re navigating ancient rivers, exploring coastal ecosystems or sailing between islands, packing for your voyage can feel like a puzzle. With shipboard life, varied shore excursions and diverse climates to consider, your suitcase needs a mix of essentials. Read on for five tips to make sure you’re ready for smooth sailing!

1. Pack For the Climate

Not all voyages take you to sunny climes! Research your destinations and prepare for their specific climates:

  • Warm and Sunny: Lightweight, breathable fabrics, a wide-brim hat, reef-safe sunscreen.
  • Cool and Crisp: Layers like thermal tops, sweaters and a waterproof jacket.
  • Wet and Rainy: Quick-dry clothes, waterproof shoes, a compact umbrella.
  • Dry and Dusty: Moisturizer, a scarf for dust and sunglasses with UV protection.

2. Dress For Shipboard Life

Life onboard is typically casual and comfortable:

  • Casual Comfort: Pack clothes you can be comfortable in for onboard lectures and social time. Wrinkle-resistant options are ideal for longer voyages. And remember, shipboard life is a bit different than land-based — think dressy casual, a slightly more formal experience than other learning adventures.
  • Layers for Indoors: A light sweater or cardigan for cooler air-conditioned areas.
  • Non-Slip Shoes: Secure, comfortable footwear is essential for safely navigating wet or uneven decks.
  • A Note on Formal Nights: While most Adventures Afloat programs are a bit more casual, some voyages may include optional formal evenings. A simple outfit — like a versatile dress or a blazer and tie — will do the trick without overpacking.

3. Be Shore-Excursion Ready

Each port offers new adventures, so versatility is key:

  • Footwear for Exploration: Comfortable, supportive walking shoes or slip-on options with good tread. Trekking poles can provide added balance on uneven terrain. If your voyage includes Zodiak excursions, you’ll want warm, waterproof and slip-proof gear for those.
  • Daypack Essentials: A lightweight crossbody bag or travel vest with pockets for easy access to sunscreen, maps, or glasses.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Modest clothing for religious sites or cultural experiences.

4. Bonus: Versatile Multi-Purpose Items

Maximize your packing with these do-it-all essentials:

  • Scarf or Wrap: Works as a blanket, shawl or accessory.
  • Packable Jacket: A lightweight option for changing weather.
  • Shoes That Transition: Choose a pair that works for casual dining and walking excursions.
  • Travel Accessories: A small magnifying glass or portable reading light for guidebooks or evening lectures.
  • Tech Gear: Many ships don’t have Wi-fi, so if that’s important to you, make sure you get an international plan to add to your cell phone package. And speaking of which, bring your phone or tablet along with you.

5. Extras For Smooth Sailing

  • Health Essentials: Pack your medications (plus extras), a travel-sized first-aid kit and compression socks for long flights or seated periods onboard. And don’t forget the Dramamine for sea sickness. Different ships have different levels of motion – riverboats and barges are very smooth, and you may not even know you are on the water! Expedition ships may have a lot of movement.
  • Comfort Must-Haves: Earplugs, an eye mask and a portable seat cushion for added comfort.
  • Compact Travel Towel: Handy for unexpected swims or shore adventures.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated onboard and ashore. Added bonus, this is a sustainable choice — small changes, like carrying a reusable bottle, can help us make a big difference!

Whether you’re socializing with other Road Scholars on deck, exploring fascinating ports or learning from expert instructors, these essentials will have you ready to embrace every moment of your Adventures Afloat voyage. Bon voyage!
