Going Solo Doesn’t Mean Going Alone: The Benefits of Solo Travel with Road Scholar

Did you know that 30% of Road Scholars travel solo each year? Solo travelers love exploring with Road Scholar for lots of different reasons, including the comfort and independence group travel offers. And it’s easy to make new friends — many solo travelers enjoy experiencing a new place alongside other people who are as interested in that city, region or waterway as they are.

Now, you can experience Road Scholar programs as a solo traveler both on one of our many engaging adventures or specifically with other solo travelers on our new Go Solo programs. Each option offers its own benefits, but no matter what learning adventure you choose, you’ll enjoy the companionship of other Road Scholars, expert Group Leaders and local instructors. Whether you embark on one of our Go Solo adventures or choose to enroll in another program by yourself, you’ll be surrounded by others who love to learn and explore as much as you do!

What is the difference between traveling solo and Go Solo programs?

Any Road Scholar can travel solo on any of our learning adventures at any time! However, sometimes solo travelers are more comfortable when they know they’ll be in the company of other solo Road Scholars, especially those who might be traveling alone for the first time.

When You Travel Solo, You’ll…

  • Join other Road Scholars, who may be traveling solo or with a partner or friends, on an exciting adventure.
  • Have the option to meet a new friend by matching with a roommate or enjoy time to yourself in a single room.
  • Experience the freedom of making your own travel decisions with the comfort of exploring with a group!

When You Travel on a Go Solo Program, You’ll…

  • Explore a new place exclusively with other solo travelers, so you’ll all make new friends!
  • Enjoy a single room all to yourself.
  • Lean on the support of your fellow solo travelers and rely on the expertise of your expert Group Leaders.

Whichever way you choose, your program will offer you the chance to explore what you’re curious about and make your own decisions about what you’re learning about, while enjoying the safety and comfort that comes with traveling with a group.

Don’t Just Take Our Word For It

Participants love traveling solo with Road Scholar so much that they’re telling everyone about it! Solo Road Scholar Brenda said, “Just returned from the Rim to Shore program in Costa Rica. This was my first time solo traveling, and it couldn't have been more delightful. I felt included from the beginning and enjoyed sharing the educational adventures with a great group of people. The blend of lectures, field trips and active adventures was the perfect recipe for a memorable experience.”

And Road Scholar Anne said, “As a solo traveler, it was wonderful to be a part of the group and learn from others, as well as the experts who spoke to us. On my own I probably wouldn't have visited some of the stops that were on the program, but everything is interesting when your group is treated as educational travelers and given exclusive access.”
