Reimer Palma
Reimer Palma is a self-proclaimed “nature guy.” He fondly recalls, at an early age, accompanying his father on walks through the rainforest to go fishing or for work. Those quiet outdoor explorations further fueled his appreciation for and an awareness of his natural surroundings. When Reimer attended a course in ecotourism at his high school, he became intrigued with the idea of becoming a naturalist guide. In 2009, he began attending natural history courses at La Selva Biological Field Station in preparation for his certification. As a naturalist leader, Reimer enjoys introducing visitors to many of Costa Rica’s beautiful protected areas; although the lush Caribbean lowlands, where he grew up, still hold the number one spot in his heart. When Reimer isn’t leading groups or enjoying time with his family, you will most likely find him hitting his college books in pursuit of his bachelor’s degree in biology.

Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
A local expert will join us at the hotel for an informative overview of Costa Rica, providing insights into the country’s history, culture and geography. We’ll check out of the hotel, board the Road Scholar bus, and begin our scenic journey to the Valley of the Saints. While driving near the farm owned by President Pepe Figueres' family, we will stop for coffee and cookies and discuss his political legacy in Costa Rica with our Group Leader. Don José “Pepe” Figueres Ferrer holds hero status in Costa Rican history, a position earned through a lifetime of political activism. Don Pepe, as he was known locally, was a key figure in the 1948 revolutionary movement that led to the ousting of President Teodoro Picado and the creation of a new constitution. Next, we’ll take a field trip to a gourmet coffee cooperative in the Valley of the Saints region to learn about coffee farming and processing and also to sample some world-class brews. The Valley’s landscape, acidic soil composition, and well defined dry and rainy seasons all lend themselves to raising coffee. Harvesting is done during the region’s dry season (November – March). Limited rainfall during those five months gives fruit an opportunity to ripen evenly and also facilitates the sun drying process.
Lunch:
At the cooperative's cafeteria.
Afternoon:
Continuing our ride, we’ll arrive at the lodge and check in with some time to freshen up, relax, and explore the lodge grounds.
Dinner:
At the lodge.

We’ll check out and begin our transfer from the lower Savegre Valley to Manuel Antonio. As we travel through the forested hills of Costa Rica’s Central Pacific Region, we’ll take the opportunity to visit the small farming community at El Silencio. During our field trip, we’ll learn from a member of the community about the history and ongoing projects of Coopesilencio—an agricultural cooperative in the area—during interactions with some of the residents. The farmlands that now make up El Silencio were once part of the United Fruit Company’s large banana growing operation in Central America. With the departure of the United Fruit Company in the early 1970s, local farmers had the opportunity to buy lands they had worked on for years. Area families created Coopesilencio in order to pool resources and work together on projects that benefit the community. Getting back on the road, we expect to arrive in Manuel Antonio in time for lunch. El Avion — “The Airplane” — is an historic restaurant literally built around a C-123 Fairchild cargo plane. We’ll learn from our Group Leader about its fascinating connection to the U.S. Iran-Contra Affair. The plane was one of a handful of aircraft purchased by the U.S. to secretly aid the counter-revolutionary movement in Nicaragua in the 1980s.

This was my first and hopefully not last Road Scholar tripI I went to Costa Rica "The Three Jewels" program. I can't say enough about this wonderful my experience! Our guide and everyone we came into contact with were professional, friendly, knowledgeable and respectful. The pacing was perfect; the meals delicious and the program experiences diverse and delightful! I can't recommend this highly enough!

Three Jewels - what an accurate description. Each location, each interaction, either cultural or in nature, sparkled and glinted like holding various precious stones in the daylight.

Just did "The 3 Jewels of Paradise" - an excellent choice! All 3 locations offered wonderful diversity. The Rafiki Safari Lodge was a particular favorite (loved the unique tent adventure), which included an awesome raft ride and walk from behind a waterfall. Highly recommend - but definitely visit Costa Rica on whichever RS program appeals most to you.

We had a terrific group of colleagues as well as the leader and driver. I loved getting to know them and their different geographical "histories". I hope I see them again in other programs....or in life! This was my 6th program and Road Scholar does not diminish over time. I have such fond memories now forever

Five stars. This was an excellent program and guide and driver. The group size of 16 was perfect. Rafiki was the highlight. Some participants were challenged by the high heat and humidity in Rafiki and Manuel Antonio. The guided walks on this trip mostly emphasize birding and are very leisurely.

This is an absolutely wonderful program highlighting 3 very different zones of biodiversity. It utilizes a smaller bus in order to navigate the curves in the road. Our driver was such an expert and delightful. For one or two optional hikes we were glad to have the use of a walking pole. If you choose this program, you will learn so much about insects, mammals, birds, and plants. The places we stayed in were beautiful. Celo had great knowledge about all of it. It was equally important for us to hear from people who live here in Costa Rica, and we were able to throughout. We combined this program with a second one: The Best of Costa Rica. We feel absolutely enriched by both. And we have now a deep respect and admiration for the people here, and their care for their land and each other.

This Road Scholar trip was varied and relaxing. I was well taken care of and able to experience things not otherwise available to tourists. I had fun and learnt a lot and felt I was immersed in the country and culture as much as possible with a 9 day trip.

Such a great experience. I'd heard that Costa Rica was amazing, but having such a knowledgeable guide and such great lecturers really made this trip special. I'll definitely be doing another Road Scholar trip.

The Three Jewels trip was a post trip, tacked on to my Costa Rica Natural Wonders trip. I wasn't sure when I signed up for the post trip if it would be too much of a good thing. It truly wasn't. Three Jewels was wonderful and added more depth to my adventures in CR. I would highly recommend doing both tips.

Road Scholar does a great job of providing a warm and friendly travel experience that is highly informative. As a world traveler who has been to most of the countries in the world, I never thought I'd find myself in a guided tour group on a bus. I loved it!

This program confirmed all the good things I have heard from others who have gone to Costa Rica. Road Scholar packed a wide range of experiences into a week of travel.. I was surprised by the amount of rain, but it did not hamper our enjoyment of the diversity of vegetation, animals and birds. Our expert guides worked hard to connect us to the key things we should see and educated us on what we were looking at. We had a wonderful small group and it was a joy to get to know all of them and share this experience with them. The Savegre Lodge and Rafiki Lodge were unique experiences adding greatly to the overall pleasure of this trip. We enjoyed the Costa Rican food, culture and people. Rafting the lower Savegre river was an exhilarating time with great guides.

An extraodinary trip with extraordinary people. I was able to peek into the lives of the local people and enjoy their foods and cultures. We were warmly welcomed everywhere. The trip leader seemed to know everything about everything, so that meant we all left the trip smarter and understanding the world a little bit better. We also experienced what it's like to be patient and understanding of one another. What a gift.

Learning, exploring, wonderful accommodations, food, and all that nature has to offer made this one of the best trips I have ever taken.

I feel it is very important for Road Scholar to be available for all who need to learn more about our world and the other people who live in it. Seeing and appreciating how other people live and learning from their ways of life should be a life long goal and learning experience for everyone. If it were the world would be a better place!

The very best Road Scholar trip we have been on! Erick was an amazing leader and Carlos a great driver over some challenging terrain. Erick's knowledge about birds , wildlife and the natural environment made learning fun. The activities were fun and varied from going on nature hikes, bird watching, white water rafting, snorkeling to visiting locals in their homes and learning about their lives. We have become captivated by Costa Rica, its people and way of life. Our traveling companions were very friendly and open and added to a relaxed atmosphere and much fun. If you want to experience Pura Vida we suggest taking this trip!

We toured three beautiful ecosystems on this tour: the cloud forest, the tropical rain forest, and the beach and estuary ecosystems. In each one, we met and listened to fascinating lectures by key people who were working on land conservation, endangered species preservation, and the development of ecotourism for sustainability of these programs. Our guide generously enriched our experience with his broad knowledge and stories of life and the history of Costa Rica. All accommodations were lovely and we were well taken care of.

Perfect intro to Costa Rica! Our guide Cristian was smart, funny, knowledgeable and candid on a wide variety of subjects and his ability to spot and get his scope on wildlife was uncanny. The 3 main locations we visited (Upper and Lower Savegre, Manuel Antonio) were all exceptional. The environmental, historical, social, and political information provided by Cristian and the other instructors was invaluable. This was our first RS trip, and we were pleasantly surprised by the camaraderie and compatibility of our group of 16.
