At a Glance

The Low Countries, consisting of Belgium and The Netherlands, began life as a swampy river delta on the northwest fringes of Europe. Yet by the 14th Century, this region was one of the most prosperous and sophisticated trading societies in the world, home to master craftsmen and artists and the world’s first stock exchange. Today, the Low Countries remains a wealthy and culturally rich region, with historic cities that reveal the fascinating heritage of its illustrious past. From the comfort of your own home, join a local expert for an online, five-day immersion into the history and culture of this fascinating region! Through lectures and online field trips, explore cities like Amsterdam and Brussels and gain insight into the artworks of Flemish masters, the political importance of the Hague and the history of World War I. Get to know your fellow Road Scholars during discussions and Q&A sessions that let you share your mutual fascination for the Low Countries.

Best of all, you’ll…

  • Learn about the influence of the Flemish masters during an online field trip to the home of the artist Peter Paul Reubens.
  • Get insight into the political history and economic trade routes that were so key to the development of the Low Countries during online field trips to the Hague, Amsterdam and Brussels.
  • Trace the history of WWI in Belgium during a lecture and online field trip to Flanders Fields.
