With natural landscapes as wild as the Amazon rainforest and urban spaces as colorful as Lima, there’s no end to what you’ll discover in Peru! Board your riverboat filled exclusively with your fellow Road Scholars and voyage into the heart of Peru’s Amazon rainforest. Along the way, explore the Pacaya-Samiria Nature Reserve, home to pink river dolphins, manatees and macaws, and the Rio Marañon and Rio Ucayal, headwaters of the mighty Amazon River. Immerse yourself in the magnificent landscapes around you through discussions with local communities and nocturnal field trips along the water. You’ll also have the opportunity to experience Lima, Peru’s largest city, and the contrasts between its colonial past and contemporary present.
Activity Level
Keep the Pace
Walking 3-5 hours daily over irregular terrain including city streets, village paths, densely forested jungle and markets, getting in and out of tenders. Weather extremes can add to the difficulty, as do elevations of up to 12,300 feet.
Small Group
Love to learn and explore in a small-group setting? These adventures offer small, personal experiences with groups of 13 to 24 participants.
Best of all, you’ll…
- Discover Lima’s colonial history and learn how to cook a favorite local dish through a hands-on cooking class.
- Experience the Amazon’s magnificence on a private riverboat and enjoy the opportunity to view wildlife in their natural habitats.
- Meet with local communities to learn about their interaction with the rainforest and how contemporary changes have affected their lives.
